Community Forum on Addiction and Mental Health “Programs and Treatments”

Tuesday June 28, 2011
6:30pm - 8:30pm
Saint Mark’s United Methodist Church
11551 Lucks Lane, Midlothian, VA 23114

A video interview with Kathleen Brady, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Brady will discuss how the underlying disorders such as anxiety, depression or truma are factors that can lead to addiction or relapse. She explains the necessity of treating these mental disorders and addiction simultaneously.

Dr. Mary Beth Moehl will present information on the Dual Treatment Track

The Dual Treatment Track is a post-booking jail diversion option for dually diagnosed incarcerated offenders in Chesterfield County and the City of Colonial Heights. By diverting offenders with co-occurring disorders from jail to a pretrial community supervision program, the Dual Treatment Track ensures safety to the community with intensive supervision while the offender is participating in an integrated treatment program for people with co-occurring disorders.

Rubicon

Andrea Wiley, Director of Clinical Services and other staff members will discuss the programs which Rubicon offers to the community.

Rubicons H.O.P.E. — This is a 28-day residential program offering integrated treatment for clients with co-occurring (Dual Diagnosis) substance use and mental health disorders.

The Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) at Rubicon is a less restrictive and more cost effective community-based residential treatment program that provides a short term treatment option for consumers when they experience a mental health crisis that requires immediate and intensive treatment interventions.

The Detoxification Program offers community based medical and social detoxification services in a twenty-four hour medically supervised unit to assist chemically dependent individuals who have chosen an abstinence-based recovery model as they withdraw from active use of alcohol and/or other drugs under the supervision of a licensed physician who establishes the appropriate medication protocol.

Family and Friends Education Groups — This is a 6 week educational series offered to family and friends of addicted and recovering people, both of Rubicon clients and in the community.

Seating is limited, so please register to attend by June 24th at facesorg1@verizon.net or call (804) 378-0035 and leave a message with name and number of people who will attend.

Firewalkers: Radically Rethinking Mental Health

FACES was proud to serve as host for the Friends 4 Recovery Support Group for several years prior to Carla receiving a grant to create the Whole Health Center.

This is an opportunity to see and hear the story of recovery in action.

Reading, book signing, and grand celebration to be held at Gallery 5 in Richmond on February 18th from 2:00pm - 4:00pm.

“When I was 32 years old and starting a children’s theme party business, I started believing my dentist was following me. I thought my teeth were bugged and there were cameras installed everywhere,” says Carla Beck. This year Carla received a $200,000 grant to create the Friends 4 Recovery Whole Health Center in Chesterfield County. What happened in between is one of seven stories we set out to tell.

The book’s title is “Firewalkers: Mystery, Beauty and Madness.” Firewalkers is a new project at VOCAL that includes a book of interviews, community arts workshops, a photo series, and outreach and storytelling events. Our goal is to offer a different way of viewing mental health, a deeper understanding of what it means and what is possible.

Editor Cassandra Nudel says, “When we set out to create Firewalkers, we wanted people to know a mental health diagnosis is not a death sentence. It is not the end of the line or the last thing that will ever happen in your life. It is a strange and unexpected journey that most of us never asked for or ever wanted. But after walking through the fire, it has brought us somewhere. And for some of us, we would not go back. Even if we could.”

This project was made possible with funding from: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services as part of the national Campaign for Mental Health Recovery, National Consumer Supporter Technical Assistance Center, a program of Mental Health America, Virginia DMHMRSAS, Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation & Substance Abuse Services.

VOCAL, Inc is a non-profit organization of people in recovery from mental illness. We are a community, support network, social change movement and self-help education program. Our organization was created by and for people who have experienced emotional and mental health crisis. VOCAL was founded in 2000.

CHEESE CURLS, HOT DOGS AND DUCT TAPE COOKBOOK REVIEW

Cheese Curls, Hot Dogs and Duct Tape
Cookbook review by Gail S. Lentz

What a wonderful surprise I had when I perused the copy of Cheese Curls, Hot Dogs and Duct Tape that I purchased at the dinner theatre fundraiser in November! I bought it for a friend who has no cookbooks and who is always asking for a good recipe. This book is a compilation of some of my favorite and most enjoyed recipes. Everyone should have one! It can be purchased for $5 at the FACES Family Center. That’s a deal. Do yourself or a friend a favor and buy one. You’ll love it!

These very popular cookbooks were donated to FACES by the Fisher family in memory of Andrew Fisher.
