May 2010

FACES was recently treated to an informative and hopeful program about a non-profit residential treatment program that is designed to help residents diagnosed with serious mental illness recover, return to school and work, maximize their quality of life beyond a psychiatric setting, and achieve their goal of independent living.

Daniel Herr, J.D., Executive Director and Lynda Hyatt, PhD, Clinical Director, spoke with us about the program at Gateway Home, Inc. Gateway Homes welcomes adult men and women who have been diagnosed with serious mental illness and whose desire is for increased independence.

Gateway Homes blends a three-tiered residential living program with educational and therapeutic psychosocial rehabilitation.

Assessment Center

The Assessment Center — which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — is a licensed assisted living facility providing housing and residential treatment for 15 men and women with staff supervision and psychiatric rehabilitation services. All of our residents begin their stay at this level. In the first 30 days of admission, a thorough baseline assessment is performed and an individualized treatment plan is created with the resident and their family. At this level, our staff educates residents about their mental illness and the importance of taking medications for treatment of their illness. They also work with residents to develop and refine the daily living and coping skills needed to manage their illness. Each resident is offered at least 20 hours of individual skills training, counseling, classroom education, and community activities each week.

Supported Living Program

When they are prepared, residents will graduate from the Assessment Center to Gateway’s Supported Living Program, which offers on-campus apartment living.

Our staff works with each person to help them live as they would out in the community. Residents continue to receive comprehensive mental health treatment and are challenged to become more responsible and self-sufficient.

Residents focus on developing socialization, educational and vocational skills for job placement, and management of their mental illness with continued medication education.

Community Living Program

In the third and final level of Gateway’s program, residents transition to independent living in the community. On a weekly basis, they receive staff support to ensure they’re successfully managing their mental illness, their responsibilities, and their independence. They are also invited to continue their participation in the many social events and psychosocial rehabilitation programs available on our campus.
